My first professional work involved drawing. SCRIMSHAW CARVING.
Engraving actually, this work helped support me during my school years.
I engraved hundreds of Sperm Whale teeth ranging in size from a few ounces to over five pounds. I also engraved Walrus ivory, Ostrich eggs, custom knife handles, and various other forms of ivory, including matched pairs of Elephant tusks. This work came to a halt in the mid-1970's with the U.S. government's ban of ivory importation and usage (except for Native Americans such as the Inuit). My conscience would not allow use of this medium today.
